No pre-licensing course, one 60-question exam, a $10,000 bond and a $50 fee. Here's every step to your Indiana public adjuster license.
You want to become a public adjuster in Indiana. Good call. The path is shorter than most people think, and we'll walk you through it one step at a time.
Here's the short version. There's no pre-licensing course to sit through and no fingerprints. You pass one state exam, buy a bond, and apply to the state. The exam is the step that takes real work, so that's where we spend our time with you.
A public adjuster works for the policyholder, not the insurance company. When a home or business owner has a property claim, you document the loss, build the estimate and negotiate the settlement on their behalf.
Indiana licenses public adjusters under Indiana Code 27-1-27, and the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI) issues the license. Acting as a public adjuster without one breaks the law, and a contract you sign without a license is void.
For a resident license you need to:
Any felony can be grounds to deny a license. A felony involving dishonesty or breach of trust also needs the state's written consent under federal law, known as a 1033 waiver, before you can work in insurance. If you already hold a public adjuster license in your home state, you may qualify for a non-resident Indiana license instead.
Before you can book, email agentlicensing@idoi.in.gov and ask IDOI for a Certificate of Test Eligibility. Then schedule with Pearson VUE. The exam is 60 scored questions in 60 minutes, you need a scaled score of 70 to pass, and it costs $50 per attempt. Plan on taking it in person at a test center.
This is the step people underestimate. It covers Indiana regulation, policy language, how losses are adjusted and building construction. Our guide to what's on the Indiana public adjuster exam breaks it down section by section.
Indiana requires a $10,000 surety bond payable to the state. It can't be more than six months old when you apply. It typically runs around $100 a year.
Apply online through Sircon at sircon.com/indiana, or on the paper NAIC form. You'll need your exam pass, your bond, five years of work history and the $50 license fee, plus a small processing fee.
Before you sign your first client, your contract form has to be filed with and approved by IDOI. Every Indiana public adjuster license expires on December 31. You renew each year for $50 with a bond continuation certificate, and there's no continuing education requirement.
Most of your time goes into getting ready for the exam. Our class gets that done in three days. IDOI doesn't post a processing time for public adjuster applications, so apply as soon as you've passed. Everything else you need to know about the Indiana public adjuster license is on our home page.
