You've decided to get licensed. Now it's you and the exam. Here's the good news. The Indiana public adjuster exam is published down to the question count, so you can know exactly what's coming before you walk in.
The exam in numbers.
- 60 scored questions, with no extra unscored questions on the current outline.
- 60 minutes.
- A scaled score of 70 to pass.
- $50 per attempt, paid when you book.
- Given by Pearson VUE for the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI).
What's on the Indiana public adjuster exam?
Pearson VUE's Indiana content outline splits the 60 questions into seven sections:
- Adjusting losses (15 questions). Your role next to an independent adjuster, the insured's duties, investigation, estimates, depreciation, salvage, appraisal and adjuster reports.
- Homeowners policies (11). The HO-2, HO-3, HO-4, HO-5, HO-6 and HO-8 forms, Section I coverages, exclusions and endorsements.
- Insurance basics (10). Contract law, indemnity, perils, actual cash value and replacement cost, policy structure, coinsurance, and Indiana laws such as mine subsidence.
- Building construction (9). Roofing, siding, framing, foundations, mechanical systems, remediation, debris removal and building codes.
- Insurance regulations (7). Licensing, renewal, discipline, unfair claims practices and the 1033 rule.
- Commercial package policies (6). Commercial property, business income, inland marine and farm.
- Dwelling policies (2). The DP-1, DP-2 and DP-3 forms.
Where should you spend your study time?
Follow the weights. Adjusting losses and homeowners policies make up 26 of the 60 questions, more than 40% of the exam. Regulations are only seven questions, but they're pure detail, rules you either know or you don't. If you come from construction, the building section will feel familiar. The policy language is where you'll want the most practice.
How do you book the exam?

- Schedule with Pearson VUE at pearsonvue.com/in/insurance or by phone at 866-895-0496, at least one day ahead and before your certificate expires.

- Arrive 30 minutes early with a government photo ID and your certificate.
What if you don't pass?
You get a printed score report at the test center, pass or fail. If it's a fail, you can retake after 48 hours and pay the $50 again. Don't give up. Look at which sections cost you points and go back to them.
